In January 2025, Erik Orsenna, patron of the 22nd UNESCO Sound Week, dubbed him a decibelator.

Created by Préventec on the initiative of the NGO “La Semaine du Son”, the aim of this creation is simple: to familiarize the general public with the notion of the decibel.

But why?
Quite simply because this unit of measurement is not very well rooted in people’s minds. Just as we can feel cold or heat without difficulty thanks to the degree Celsius, the notion of the decibel is little perceived and even less evaluated by the general public, except when noise is too loud and causes auditory discomfort.

La Semaine du Son’s proposal is to initiate the installation of this device with an educational aim. In this way, the public will be able to get a precise idea of the noise level to which they are subjected in real time, and better grasp the place and importance of sound in our everyday environment.

Visible, luminous yet discreet, the decibelator can be integrated into any environment, thanks to its waterproof design. Reasonably sized [250 mm (W) X 130 mm (H) X 50 mm (D)], it is positioned high up on a facade or interior wall, and is available as a single or double display (flag-type). It provides an instantaneous measurement (every second) of noise levels.
What are the prospects and challenges for its use?
Noise has become a public health issue, and the results obtained by researchers have prompted politicians to take action.
Thanks to the decibelizer, the objective of raising awareness can lead to a reflection on the societal challenges of noise (enhancement of the urban noise environment for better living together, respect for others, educational actions linked to the youngest members of society…).
